What Downingtown Homeowners Want in an HVAC Company
When something goes wrong with the heating or cooling in a Downingtown home, the questions homeowners ask are consistent: Are they local? Will they actually show up when they say they will? Do they give you a real price before they start? And is there someone accountable on the other end of the phone at 2am in January?
After more than 20 years of HVAC work across Chester County, those are the questions Shoemaker was built to answer. Not a national franchise with a local phone number. Not a dispatch center that sends whoever is closest. A locally owned and operated HVAC company where the owner, Jacob Shoemaker, is personally on the calls.
About Jacob Shoemaker and the Shoemaker Team
Jacob Shoemaker founded Shoemaker Heating and Cooling LLC in Honey Brook, PA. He holds NATE certification, EPA 608 Universal certification, and a Pennsylvania HVAC contractor license. For over 20 years, Jacob has personally performed service calls, installations, and emergency repairs across Downingtown, Thorndale, Lionville, Caln Township, and all of Chester County.
Jacob is not a back-office owner. He is on the job. Chester County homeowners who call Shoemaker will often find Jacob himself on the other end of the call, especially for emergency service and complex diagnostic work. That level of direct involvement is rare in an industry that increasingly runs on dispatched labor from large regional companies, and it is the single most consistent thing customers mention in Shoemaker’s reviews.
Credentials, Accreditation, and What They Mean for Downingtown Homeowners
- NATE Certification: North American Technician Excellence is the HVAC industry’s most recognized independent certification. NATE-certified technicians have passed rigorous exams on HVAC theory and practical application. Not every HVAC company in Chester County requires it.
- EPA 608 Universal Certification: Federal law requires this certification to handle refrigerants. A technician without it cannot legally check or recharge your AC’s refrigerant. Jacob holds EPA 608 Universal, the highest level of this certification.
- Pennsylvania HVAC Contractor License: Required by the state to legally contract HVAC work in Pennsylvania. Ask any HVAC company you are considering for their PA contractor license number. Shoemaker’s is available on request.
- BBB Accreditation: Shoemaker Heating and Cooling is accredited by the Better Business Bureau. The BBB seal is displayed on the website. This is a verifiable signal of business accountability, not a marketing claim.

Why Downingtown Homeowners Choose Shoemaker Over Larger Regional Companies
- Response time. Shoemaker is located in Honey Brook, 20 minutes from Downingtown. When you call for emergency service, the response is local, not dispatched from a regional hub.
- Honest diagnosis. Jacob Shoemaker’s operating principle is straightforward: tell the customer what is actually wrong, what it costs to fix it, and what the alternatives are. Upselling to unnecessary work is not how Shoemaker operates.
- Written estimates before work begins. Every time. No diagnostic surprises on the invoice.
- Direct accountability. When Jacob Shoemaker’s name is on the truck, the quality of every service call is his professional reputation. That accountability structure is different from a company where technicians rotate through with no personal stake in the outcome.
- Continuity. When you call Shoemaker for the third time in five years, you are not starting over with someone who does not know your system or your home. That continuity of relationship is something Chester County homeowners consistently mention.
